Seminar 01 - Sherlock Holmes in Comics: Adaptation, Transformation, and Global Reception
Organizers: Francisco Sáez de Adana, Javier Sánchez Zapatero

Sherlock Holmes’ popularity led to the emergence of numerous apocryphal versions of the character even while Conan Doyle's stories were still being published. His first documented screen appearance was in the short film Sherlock Holmes Baffled (1900). Comics were no exception to this phenomenon, and as early as 1901, versions of Sherlock Holmes appeared in comic strips published in American newspapers, most of which were parodies. Since then, Sherlock Holmes has maintained a constant presence in comics, ranging from humorous reinterpretations to more serious narratives. In recent years, the latter have become especially prominent through numerous comic-book adaptations of the Baker Street detective. This is an intermedial phenomenon that transcends both time and geographical boundaries, as adaptations of Sherlock Holmes can be found in virtually every country with a well-established comics tradition.

This panel aims to investigate how the image of this famous character has been portrayed, focusing on the following questions, among others:

● How has the character’s image changed over time?

● How is Sherlock Holmes perceived in comics in different countries?

● What adaptation strategies have been employed to translate the character into the visual language of comics?

● What influence does the Sherlockian Canon have on his portrayal in the world of comics?

● Is it possible to create Sherlockian universes in comics?

● How has Sherlock Holmes influenced the creation and development of other comic-book detectives and investigators?

● Open to paper submissions
